The Long View - Haeusler's Group

REAL FARMS. REAL DECISIONS. REAL RESULTS OVER TIME.

Big decisions on farm aren’t judged in a day. They’re measured over seasons.

The Long View is a new video series from Haeusler’s which follows growers over time to see how new machinery and technology perform in real conditions.
From seeding through to harvest, we want to track what changes, what improves, and what it actually means for productivity and profitability.

MATT ELLIOTT

A TRIAL TO LIFT YIELD WITH THE BEDNAR TERRALAND DEEP RIPPER

Matt and his family farm approximately 3,600 hectares at Nandaly, growing wheat, barley, lentils and export oaten hay. Like many growers in our region, he’s focused on one key lever:

Nandaly grower Matt Elliott (left) with Haeusler’s (Darren Allan)

With land, inputs and costs increasing, Matt is looking at how to get more from the country he
already has, particularly in areas that are underperforming.

The Trial
The Trial
Lifting underperforming country

Around 30% of Matt's farm is naturally constrained by:

  • Soil compaction
  • Non-wetting sands
  • Variable soil performance

Rather than accepting those limitations, the focus is on improving these zones. The trial involves using the Bednar Terraland TO 6000 HM, which is designed to enable intensive loosening of the soil profile, break up compacted layers and effectively incorporate plant residues in one pass.

"If you can improve that 30% by a fair percentage, it makes a big difference at the end of the day."
— Matt Elliott.
The Approach
The Approach
Targeted deep ripping with the Bednar Terraland

After testing different options, Matt chose the Bednar Terraland deep ripper for its ability to address multiple constraints:

  • Break compaction layers
  • Improve root access to deeper moisture
  • Mix soil profiles for future treatments like lime
  • Customise setup depending on soil type

Importantly, the approach is targeted.

"Ultimately, the trial's there to make sure we increase yield. That's the aim of the game. Keep increasing yield."
— Matt Elliott.

The Long View

THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.

As the trial continues, Matt will refine where and how ripping is applied, monitoring crop emergence and using data to track his return on investment.
