Fertilizers and crop protection products are too expensive to waste, and seed is too valuable to risk over- or under-treating. To help make sure your solution is getting to the crop at exactly the right rate and droplet size across a wider range of speeds, look to ExactApply nozzle control system.
The heart of the ExactApply system is a six-nozzle turret with multiple modes of operation to help maintain target rate and pressure. From the cab, operators can choose:
- 15-Hz pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses one solenoid for more consistent pressure and droplet size over a wider range of ground speeds and application rates.
- 30-Hz PWM pulses both solenoids at 15 Hz for more thorough coverage during high-volume applications, like liquid fertilizer.
- AutoSelect A/B mode automatically switches between two nozzles to maintain a constant spray pressure while you’re spraying conventionally.
- Turn compensation mode decreases the spray rate on the inside of a turn while increasing the rate on the outside, ensuring consistent application across the entire width of the boom.
- Individual nozzle control minimizes overlap by controlling spray application at the individual nozzle level, not in 2.4- to 3.35-m (8- to 11-ft) section widths.
By maintaining a target rate and pressure over a wider range of speeds, ExactApply lets you cover up to 20 more acres per hour (based on a 3.2-km/h [2-mph] increase in operating speed) with more consistent spray deposition, saving you input costs and preserving more of your crop’s yield potential.
New for model year 2026, John Deere is introducing ExactApply Multi-Rate which enhances our ExactApply nozzle capabilities by enabling the delivery of multiple rates across the eleven sections of the boom in a single pass, regardless of the boom length. This innovation allows for improved rate resolution, particularly while utilizing application prescriptions. Now operators can target specific zones for optimized application, which will enhance crop consistency across varying field conditions. Critical uses include tailored fertilizer for small grains and corn, based on plant and soil conditions, such as top-dressing in wheat, as well as pre or post emerge nutrients for corn.
ExactApply Auto Select Pulsing with A+B Nozzle Switching, enables the Multi-Rate function, expanding performance and speed ranges while ensuring proper droplet size and placement. It also significantly increases the rate range during curve compensation, allowing versatile utilization across all three nozzle configurations within the eleven sections for optimal application.
ExactApply Multi-Rate is a software update included in order code 4985- John Deere ExactApply Nozzle Control and available on model year 2026 R4023, 408R, 410R, 612R, as well as the 616R sprayers. It is also compatible with model year 2022 and forward. A+B Switching and Pulsing compatible with all ExactApply configurations.
ExactApply is available as a factory-installed option, as well as through Aftermarket Attachments and Precision Upgrades.
ExactApply aftermarket attachment kits are available for 4 Series Sprayer models.

Understanding the differences between John Deere’s application technologies is critical to selecting the right solution for operational efficiency, input savings, and agronomic performance. While Section Valves, Individual Nozzle Control (INC), INC HD, INC Pro, and ExactApply all aim to improve spray accuracy and reduce overlap, each system offers a different level of nozzle management, rate control capability, and spray consistency. From basic boom section shutoff to advanced pulse-width modulation and turn compensation technologies, these solutions build upon one another to deliver increasing levels of precision and performance in the field.
The Differences
Section Valves: Only enables 5 and up to 13 individual sections (depending on boom size) Automatically turns sections of the boom on and off to reduce overlap and skips. Operates at the section level rather than individual nozzles, helping reduce input waste and operator fatigue. Section Valves are offered with both standard flow and high-flow pumps, along with the high-flow nozzle bodies enable the highest flow rate.
Individual Nozzle Control (INC): Enables nozzle-by-nozzle shutoff instead of larger boom sections. Improves coverage accuracy in irregular field shapes, point rows, waterways, and headlands while minimizing overapplication. Offered as a factory installed option in MY27.
INC HD: Builds on INC adding higher-definition nozzle control with increased precision and faster response capability. This level of nozzle technology is a heavy-duty/ high-flow version of INC, supporting larger orifice nozzles for heavy fertilizer and high-volume application needs. Designed for tighter application accuracy and improved performance in demanding operating conditions, INC HD is a strong fit for platforms like the LS20 and LS475. It is not available as a factory-installed option but can be ordered through Precision Upgrades.
INC Pro: Also builds on INC by enabling turn and speed compensation and enhanced coverage consistency across the boom. Helps maintain more accurate application rates and droplet placement when sprayer speeds vary through turns. Enables On/Off, Turn Compensation, Speed Compensation and Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of 15Hz. INC Pro can apply Multi-Rate for MY22 and forward machines. Offered as a factory installed option in MY27.
ExactApply: ExactApply is John Deere’s most advanced spray control system, utilizing Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) technology to deliver exceptional application accuracy, consistency, and efficiency across varying operating conditions. Designed to maintain consistent pressure and droplet size across a wide speed range, ExactApply helps operators optimize spray coverage while minimizing drift potential and maintaining application quality. The system enables advanced precision features such as turn compensation, which automatically adjusts flow across the boom to maintain target application rates through curves, as well as Individual Nozzle Control to reduce overlap and minimize overapplication. ExactApply also supports Multi-Rate application capabilities on MY22 and forward, allowing multiple prescription rates to be applied independently across the boom for greater precision and input management. With premium PWM spraying capabilities up to 30Hz and dual nozzle body functionality offering A, B, or A+B operation, operators gain expanded speed flexibility, improved droplet size management, and enhanced product application versatility. Its factory-integrated design ensures seamless compatibility with John Deere precision technologies while improving overall spray performance, operational efficiency, boundary and headland accuracy, and input stewardship across a variety of field conditions. With the introduction of the MY27 Sprayers, Automatic Solution Control is now in base on John Deere 400 and 600 Series Sprayers – eliminating manual solution control valves and moving fully to an electronic system.
This update replaces manual flow control valves with electronically actuated valves, delivering a major step forward in ease of use, precision, and operational efficiency. Operators can now control loading, rinsing, and the SprayStar™ Rate Control directly from the cab or the load station, reducing time, effort, and potential for error.
The updated system also features a simplified, standardized keypad and labeling shared across machine models – improving usability, streamlines software consistency, and training efficiency.
By removing the need for manual valve operation, Automatic Solution Control:

Automatic Solution Control Premium takes the proven performance of Automatic Solution Control to the next level by adding a dedicated high-capacity fill pump and a fully optimized fill system. The result is faster loading, improved chemical management, and enhanced system cleanliness – helping operators spend less time filling and more time applying.
Whether you’re switching between multiple chemistries or working within tight application windows, Automatic Solution Control Premium is designed to simplify the process while reducing the potential for contamination.

- Faster fills, less downtime. A dedicated fill pump delivers fill rates of up to 250 gallons per minute (depending on tank and hose configuration), reducing typical fill times from 12–15 minutes to just 5–8 minutes.

Single Product Systems

How It Works
Unlike standard systems that rely on the onboard solution pump for filling operations, Automatic Solution Control Premium utilizes a dedicated fill pump for both side-fill and front-fill operations. This dedicated architecture allows filling and spraying systems to operate independently, improving efficiency while supporting cleaner chemical management practices.
Because the fill-side plumbing is separated from the spray-side plumbing, there is no direct connection between the fresh-water fill system and chemical delivery system, helping reduce the potential for cross-contamination.
Automatic Solution Control Premium utilizes two completely independent plumbing systems:
- A dedicated fill system moves fresh water into the solution tank using the high-capacity fill pump.
- A separate spray system supplies product to the boom using the onboard solution pump.
Because these systems are isolated from one another, there is no direct plumbing connection between the fill side and the chemical application side, significantly reducing opportunities for contamination.

Pressure recirculation plumbing
Quality of application is critical. Avoid settling in the plumbing by keeping solution in motion with pressure recirculation, coupled with product reclaim and boom air purge. These features save precious time, product, and expense when rinsing and priming the boom while switching solutions.
Cost savings
- Pressure recirculation primes the boom versus traditional boom prime where liquid tends to be sprayed out, saving 113.6 L (30 gal.) each time. If an operator does this process 10 times a day, coupled with approximately 85.2 L (22.5 gal.) of solution savings with product reclaim one to two times per day, these two features together could save up to $600* a day.
- *NOTE: Assumes 113.6 L (30 gal.) of residual product in the system at 93.5 L/ha (10 gpa) and $20 per acre 10 times per day. Adjust the calculation to suite your operation.

Performance:
- Experience uniform distribution of product across the boom.
- Reduce nozzle clogging with increased agitation of product in the solution system.
Keep solution in suspension in the boom and system while the machine is on and not spraying with pressure recirculation. Recirculation during rinsing removes any chemical that settled out of the suspension while spraying, resulting in higher rinse water velocity in the spray pipe. Rinse water can be recirculated multiple times to further clean spray pipes and reduce cleanout times. Boom pressure recirculation mixes the solution and primes the boom before spraying to obtain a homogenous chemical mixture throughout the solution system and up to the nozzle tip. This recirculation improves spray quality and reduces time at the start of spraying.
Product reclaim transfers chemical out of the boom plumbing into solution tanks to improve boom rinse functions, also reducing exposure when servicing nozzle bodies. Additionally, save on chemical cost and enable easier rinse water collection between rinses when operators are not spraying out of the boom in the field.
NOTE: Pressure recirculation and product reclaim kits are available to order as aftermarket upgrade kits through Parts and as Complete Goods through precision upgrade. Precision upgrades offers kits for 400, 600, and most R4 Series Sprayers while Parts offers kits for R4030-R4060 Sprayers.

How does the system prevent chemical contamination during filling?
- The fill system and spray system use completely separate plumbing. Fresh water entering through the fill pump never shares plumbing with the chemical application circuit, greatly reducing cross-contamination risk.
Does the front fill use the dedicated fill pump?
- Yes. Both front-fill and side-fill operations utilize the dedicated fill pump rather than the onboard solution pump.
Are there separate front-fill connections for water and chemical?
- No. There is a single front-fill connection that feeds the fill pump. Fresh-water filling remains available through the dedicated side fill line.
Does the fill pump operate the induction hopper?
- No. The induction hopper suction is powered by the solution pump.
The eductor rinse can be supplied from:
- The solution tank, using pressure from the solution pump, or
- The rinse tank, using pressure from the fill pump.
Is the fresh-water tank fill still separate?
- Yes. Fresh-water filling continues to utilize its dedicated 2-inch hose line.
